</i>MONTROSE - Ralph “Gene” Carter, age 62, of Montrose, passed away Nov. 17, 2010, at his home. Gene was born Dec. 13, 1947 to Ralph Gene and Mary (Crandall) Carter Sr., in Englewood, Colo. He spent his childhood at Rialto, Calif. Gene married Peggy Smith, Dec. 19, 1966 in Las Vegas, Nev. Over the years, he had also resided in the southern California area; Delta, Utah; Dolton, S.C.; Norwood, Delta and then to Montrose, Colo. where Gene and Peggy made their home until his time of death. Gene was self-employed and was a beekeeper for many years in the Montrose area. He was a former president of Colorado State Beekeepers Association, American Beekeeping Federation, Sioux Honey Association (Sue Bee Honey) and the N.R.A. He was a hard worker with a tremendous drive and dedication to the business he built; “Carter Honey Farms, Inc.” He was a member of the Seventh-Day Baptist Church and was very strong in his faith and love for the Lord. Gene was a devoted husband, father, son and brother. He enjoyed the outdoors, mountains, hunting and fishing. Gene’s number one priority was his family, and he enjoyed spending time with them and will be greatly missed.

Surviving family members include his wife, Peggy of the family home in Montrose; his mother, Mary Gene Carter of Sacramento, Calif; daughters, Sandra Lynn Simon of Bettendorf, Iowa, Laura Anne Self of Saginaw, Texas, Pamala Gene Carter of Osan, South Korea and Maria Diane Mroczek of Spokane, Wash.; one brother, Victor Carter of Ripon, Calif.; sisters, Jeanette Carter Campbell of Oakdale, Calif., Barbara Jean of Vacaville, Calif., Debbie Carter of Sacramento, Calif., Cynthia Culpepper of Clinton, Utah; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Gene Carter; daughter, Tamara Sue Sanner; and brother, William “Billy” Paul Carter.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at the family home, 776 Orchard Road in Montrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2754 Compass Dr., Suite 328, Grand Junction, CO 81506. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.
