News

The big news last year was Becky's wedding and our trip to South Africa.

Our whole family - or at least the adults - traveled to Hillcrest, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa where we met her fiancé, Greg Goodrick and his family. Hillcrest is a suburb of the third largest city in the country, Durban.

Georgia and I took Lufthansa to Frankfurt, then enjoyed the incomparable service offered by South African Airways to Johannesburg then took a local flight to Durban. Terry and Christi flew on Delta to Paris, then Air France to Jo'burg; Jackie flew SAA from Washington directly to Jo'burg.

We met and instantly fell in love with Becky's soon-to-be husband and and his family: his mother Sue, his brothers Tim and Chris (a/k/a Kiffy), and his sister Penny and her friend Brad. I don't think it would have been possible to find a more compatible family group. We felt immediately comfortable around all of our new extended family, and are still marvelling at how fortunate indeed both Greg and Becky are that they met each other.

It's a great time to be in South Africa - the 2010 World Cup will focus the world's attention on this vibrant, exciting country; and Clint Eastwood's powerful film Invictus (with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon) should give you a taste of the true political miracle which has occurred there in the last 15 years.

The wedding went off without a hitch - well, without major hitches. I was proud to escort Becky down the aisle as my sister Cathy played Ashokan Farewell (on CD, not in person, unfortunately), the same beautiful music she had played at Terry and Christi's wedding. Before the wedding, we visited the Karkloof zip line tour - and after the wedding went on a trip to the astonishing Umfolozi Game Preserve (also described here), and a church camp nestled on a white sand beach on the Indian Ocean organized by Greg and Becky's church family.

There's lots more to tell, and I will be revising this page in the next few days, so please check back for more details. Or ask us!

Family Update

  • Steve and Georgia. Steve is retired from the practice of law, and no longer a soccer referee, although I am an instructor for new referees with better knees! I was a county judge for 32 years: longer than anyone in the state of Colorado, and retired from that position six years ago. Ed Sands and I sold our law practice to the law firm of Garfield & Hecht, who have opened a Rifle officeat our former location. Ed will continue to practice there, and I am "of counsel" which means that I will be there when I want to. Georgia has also retired, and the two of us have cleaned up the house and put it on the market in order to downsize. A five bedroom house is just too big for two people.
  • Terry, Christi, Katy, Emily and Josh - Terry and Christi live in Grand Junction, Colorado; Terry is a surveyor with a large engineering firm. They have three children. Christi, is Certified Nurse Assistant and works several days a week at a Grand Junction nursing home and was just accepted into the nursing program at Mesa State. Their children are in the first grade, preschool and pre-preschool.
  • Becky and Greg Goodrick were married near Durban, South Africa, on September 5, 2009, and are currently living on the island nation of Mauritius, where she teaches science and he has volunteered his time to help build an auditorium for their church..
  • Jackie finished five years with the Marine Corps, emerging as a Captain, including two tours of duty in Iraq, and now lives and works as a security manager for a Target store in the San Diego area. She took most of the pictures you see in our photo album.
